Beautiful Oops! I have always loved this book. Sooo well made and the lesson of turning “mistakes” into something beautiful is a life skill for our children. Once we read the book, we used finger stamps, closed our eyes to make dots on the paper and then use our creativity to turn it into something beautiful! (Added bonus: I turned this into a handwriting activity too by labeling each picture and then writing a sentence about it!) #otskills #creativity #creativityforkids #finemotor #finemotorskills #homeschool #learning #learningthroughplay

Our children’s lives have been turned upside dow

Our children’s lives have been turned upside down. What they counted on in the routine of school to help them stay grounded and regulated is no longer consistent (in person, on zoom, shut down a class, reopen a class, divided recess, plexiglass desktop, masked friends and teachers) it’s A LOT for little kids. Then they often hear “it’s too much to have them home” where they now feel like burdens in the very 4 walls that are meant to be their safe place. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Our children’s emotional health is a PRIORITY. Academics can always get caught up. Fine motor and gross motor skills too. However, their mental health is a lot more important and fragile. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As parents and as educators our focus needs to be how to help children feel safe from the inside. Safety allows children to feel grounded and open to learn and thrive. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Create the time during the day, both at home and at school, where children can voice their feelings and their fears. Let’s give them tools for mindfulness and for using the power of their breath to stay calm. Take the time to slow down.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We can help children through all these changes by teaching and modeling grounding strategies so that they can build resilience no matter what life brings.

Meet Kristy!

Kristy was the first COTA at Miss Mancy’s. She has been on the team since forever!!! I remember meeting Kristy and thinking how kind and graceful she was. Kristy has always been the OT that rolls up her sleeves and gets it done. When I had to take off for a little while to have surgery, Kristy covered my schedule and drive from one end of the city to the other for months! (And never once complained!!) How grateful am I for her dedication. Kristy is kind and gentle with the children and always goes above and beyond to grow in her learning.
